“Life in the fast lane
Surely make you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, everything all the time
Life in the fast lane, uh huh,”
Crooned the Eagles some 37 years back. Got me wondering what would be my top tracks to grove to while I go speeding down the highway (Jeep would be the vehicle of choice). Here’s a list of my six most desirable.
1) Buddy Guy- ON THE ROAD
An absolute smasher from the album Living Proof about his “Blue Merc with a Snakeskin top”. Buddy shows he’s still got his mojo at the tender age of 80. You just can’t help but feel peppy.
‘Give it some juice, turn my motor loose
On the Road.’
Hell yeah baby!
2) AC/DC – HIGHWAY TO HELL
Boy o boy! What should I say about this classic? Anywhere anytime, unless you are cuddling up to your partner or takin’ your granny for a walk. Morning blues? Feeling angry?Let it out with this freakin’ mindblower!
‘And I’m going down, all the way down
I’m on the highway to hell’
Care to join?
3) Sting ft. Cheb Mami – DESERT ROSE
A contemporary chartbuster, Sting’s soothing and lilting voice and Mami’s vocal artwork calms you down instantly on a long winding road.
‘Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall‘
4) Led Zeppelin – KASHMIR
Do yourself a favour. Just listen to this song and bow down before the GODS of classic rock. The very song which defines Led Zep. Page and John Paul Jones are massive here and Bonham takes drumming to the next level. Interestingly although the song’s name is Kashmir, it was written while traversing the Sahara in southern Morocco.
‘Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream,
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been.’
I should have been born in the seventies.
5) Bleu Edmondson – TRAVEL MAN
Probably the best ever travelling blues written. Such depth and soul. Perfect companion for a ride.
‘A neon sign calls me to sleep
But I’m wide awake so I roll on
Travelin’ man, ride as far as I can stand
My momma cries for the life I choose’
6) Jimi Hendrix – Little Wing
Well it’s Hendrix, what’s there to say?
‘Well she’s walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that’s running round
Butterflies and zebras
And moonbeams and fairy tales
That’s all she ever thinks about
Riding with the wind.
When I’m sad, she comes to me
With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free
It’s alright she says it’s alright
Take anything you want from me,
Fly on little wing,
Yeah yeah, yeah, little wing’
Painfully short, painfully beautiful.
So here they are, eargasm for a road trip. What about you?
